‘Ayurveda is awesome. It is a brilliant medicine system that originated in this mystical land called India. Unlike western medicine, it doesn’t have any side-effects. It is made only from natural and organic material. It can cure anyone of anything. It can fix every illness known to mankind, even the ones that have stumped western scientists. Ayurveda can cure cancer. With so many obviously good qualities attributed to this wonderful creation of the ancients, it’s surprising to see the rest of the world hasn’t already accepted it as the default medicine system. Why on earth is that?’
Every so often, I come upon online articles suggesting that Hindu rites, rituals and traditions are scientific. That’s to say, the loony stuff they do all the time has lesser to do with their latent lunacy than to do with science. It’s extremely easy to call bullshit on those claims and their explanations; they reek of scientific illiteracy. That’s exactly what’s not happening though. Those articles are shared in the millions and it’s not all in jest. The majority of them actually believe it.
To me, evolution is the greatest theory ever. It does a remarkable job of explaining our existence and our relationship with every other living thing on the planet. The theory of evolution is implicit in many modern disciplines. The fields of biology and medicine would have no basis without it. It has been one of the most useful ideas in the history of humankind as it, in part, explains how diseases work and has helped us be better prepared against exploits to many of our weaknesses. We live longer than our ancestors did because of our knowledge of evolution.
India is a country full of idiots. It is extremely easy to manufacture bullshit and sell it to them. Of course, I mean bullshit in the figurative sense – the one that is synonymous with ‘nonsense’ – although it is just as easy to sell them literal cow crap and pee, but that’s a discussion for another time. One can exploit their gullibility for monetary gain and be quite successful at it. The worst thing about being a rational mind in India is to watch people waste their lives and their hard earned money on those predators and not being able to do much about it.
Pair-bonding – the species neutral term for marriage or social monogamy – is one of the things ingrained in our very being and is as natural to us as breathing. It’s something all of us are programmed to partake in. Believe it or not, that’s more of a feature, strengthened with every one of our procreative iterations, than a vestige. Simply put, people with a knack for pair-bonding ended up living long enough for the successful survival of their immediate descendants and for a good reason – we suck at everything. Apart from our incredible thinking capabilities, there is nothing we can do that other animals couldn’t better. The survival of humanity isn’t simply enhanced by this practice; we don’t stand a chance without it. As long as a significant portion of the human population keep doing it, we can be assured that humans will exist long enough to have a few of them deny that they descended from us, the way creationists do with primordial apes.
